NFL teams are quickly learning that their fans stand for America which is evident after viewing the response to the Green Bay Packers attempts for a ‘united' protest.
Thursday night football players from the Green Bay Packers and the Chicago Bears linked arms during the national anthem to show support for both sides of the NFL controversy and requested that their fans join in to display ‘acceptance' and ‘unity.' Patriotic Americans had a different response in mind and to the dismay of the players, every seat in the stadium was empty as all the fans stood for the national anthem with cheers of ‘USA USA' ringing out across the field.
Although small groups of fans fans were littered throughout the stadium who also chose to participate in the linking of arms, it's clear that the majority feel that protesting by disrespecting the national anthem is in poor taste.
According to quarterback Aaron Rodgers, this was a moment that stood for, “…equality.” As well as “…unity and love, and growing together as a society and starting a conversation around something that may be a little bit uncomfortable for people.”
Instead, the activity most Packers fans elected to participate in when it came time to honor America, was to chant “USA! USA! USA!”
Fan outrage, in Green Bay in particular, has been intense since last weekend’s protests. Many Packers fans called the team office throughout the week, letting them know how uncomfortable they felt with the protests, and team’s efforts to get the fans to join in the demonstration on Thursday night.
NFL players are now left with the choice of continuing to offend the fans who supply them with a paycheck or do the right thing and stand in support of America when the star spangled banner is performed. Or alternatively they are welcome to leave America for the ‘oppressed' nations they claim to support.
